Salt lakes in Nin have been used to make salt since the Roman times. Fortunately, good people of Nin have recognized its potential and decided to turn it into a serious business, where tradition meets the future. Nin sea salt is being produced the natural way, and they are proud to be the only ones who produce Croatian Fleur de sel, gently called “the salt caviar”.
Fleur de sel is top quality, unrefined sea salt. It is collected exclusively by hand, when the conditions allow it, early in the morning or late in the evening when there’s no wind. It can be spotted on the sea surface as a thin layer of salt flakes. Its mineral content and moisture is higher than in the table salt. They also say its “crystal energetic structure” is extraordinary, due to its natural and undisturbed “growth”. Chefs love it, and there must be a good reason for it!
So, be sure to get your hands on some Nin salt, or visit the newly opened salt museum right next to the “factory”. Be quick, before they export it all to Japan, where the quality of Nin salt has already been recognized!
We’re going to organize a little pairing&tasting here at Taste of Croatia, and let you know how we liked different combinations! Coming soon…
