Amfora: Not Fishy at All!

Amfora: Not Fishy at All!

If you didn’t what to look for, you’d never find little restaurant called Amfora in the bustle of Dolac, Zagreb’s central market. At first sight, it definitely doesn’t beckon you to enter. It looks like a worn-out joint from old socialist times. But stop and take a look at the board displaying their daily specials. Various kinds of fresh fish, mostly smaller and not so fancy kinds, grilled or fried, at a very reasonable price: picarels, anchovies, sardines, mackerels, whitings, hakes, surmullets… No wonder, the owner is also a fishmonger, and that’s usually the best guarantee that you’re eating the real stuff. Don’t expect to be swept away by the interior or service. And don’t mind the shabby bar downstairs. Just climb up to the claustrophobic and chaotic restaurant area upstairs and if you’re lucky, you’ll find a seat. Sit back and enjoy Amfora’s simple and honest fish dishes, perfectly accompanied by rustic Plavina table wine. Escape the hubbub of Dolac that surrounds you and get transported to to a lazy and sunny Dalmatian afternoon.
